Bakery and trainings Bon Berger

Description of the project:

In the context of socio-economic development "Bon Berger" wants to start a bakery project. After the set-up of the school, visited by children af rather prosperous parents, Bon Berger wants to create jobs for the family members of underprivileged children, so they get the opportunity to take their fate in their own hands. The association has also the intension to become an important producer of bakery products and to stock a big part of the Nyamata-market.

Objectives:

  • Job creation
  • Provide help to the underprivileged children and their parents
  • Creation of a market for the local retail (farmers)
  • Development of the region 

Beneficiaries:

This project runs in a region with a very low standard of living. Purpose is create jobs for the poor parents of Bon Berger-children as well as those from the close environment or to become supplier of base products needed for baking and producing bread products (e.g. milk, eggs,…)

Follow-up of the project

Name project:  Project 82: Bakery Bon Berger - Nyamata

General status:

This report covers the month of April and has as taregt to inform the donators about the status of the completing the works and installation.

Progress since last status report:

In the past period the works continued and some are completed: walls, construction and ceilings, floors, electricity and the oven are installed and ready to use. The materials purchased in Dubai are delivered. The final works are ongoing: painting and interior fittings.

Financial status:

From the funds of 18.711.000 Frw remains a balance of 5.206.225 Frw (+/- 4.950 €).

Problems/concerns:

Delay in the works because of heavy rains, which flooded the whole country since the beginning of March. We encountered damage to the materials and the construction works had to be halted regularly. There was an increase in salaries and materials.

This report covers the period May till mid of June, to keep our sponsors updated on the status of the activities.

Progress since last status report:
The planned activities have been executed. We’ve send a request for cooperation with the district of Bugesera. Once we have their confirmation we will request a certificate from the Rwanda Governance Board to work in an official and legal way. In the meanwhile we started with baking bread, donuts, pastries, …. for the children in the Bon Berger school and the surrounding community. We are looking around to establish an outlet for our products.

Name project: Bakery and trainings Bon Berger

General status:

This report covers the period from mid June till mid of September.

Progress since last status report:

In this period, the bakery was productive to the benefit of the children of Bon Berger and the immediate environment of the school. The number of customers evolves in a positive way.
Related to the administration, we got confirmation from the sector Nyamata. We are still waiting for a cooperation agreement of the district.

P.S.: We are going to purchase a big artisanal deep fryer. For the purchase and installation we have foreseen a budget of 347.000 RwFr.

Problems/concerns:

Some shops don’t give receipts; there we have a shortage of +/- 480.000 RwFr in the receipts. On top, some of the receipts are hard to read (bad quality of ink)); therefore we will make a copy every time in the future.
The commercialisation of our products is difficult, as we don’t have labels. We are still waiting for the cooperation agreement of the district Bugesera to allow us to register our association at the Rwanda Governance Board. Consequently our external deliveries are limited.

Project 82 – Extension: gas oven

Description of the project:

Purchase of a gas oven + related costs

Objectives:

The target for the bakery is to have an oven, which is compliant to the norms of the Rwanda Standards Board. This is very important, as a gas oven is better for the environment.

The gas oven will also allow bakers to have an accurate control on bake and cook time.

Beneficiaries:

All the members of the association Le Bon Berger-Nyamata
