Surrounding mothers in cutting and sewing practice

Location:   Kiyabo, Bweyeye, Rusizi, Western Province

Project leadtime: 2 year

Requestor:  Eustache Gatete

Description of the project:

Young people in the region are the victims of overcrowding and lack of work. They sink deeper into misery, prostitution, delinquency, drugs, vagrancy and unemployment.
The initiated project, training in cutting and sewing, will offer a solution for the problems of the young mother.
It is essentially about supervision and training without generating money; the exploitation of the products that we will obtain will allow the self-financing of the project.

Objectives:

for 120 young mothers (per year):

  • Training and guidance to prevent school and family drop-out
  • Preparing for socio-economic and professional integration
  • Limit the effects of unemployment to promote a positive youth
  • Promotion of peace, security and development

Beneficiaries:

120 young girls from Bweyeye and surroundings

Budget: 8.000.850 RwFr

Risks:

- Political risk (change of standards or technical rules)
- Conflicts between beneficiaries
- Insufficient budget

Follow-up of the project

Date: 20th September, 2019

Name project: surrounding mothers in cutting and sewing practice

General status:

There were 120 beneficiary girls at the start of the project. Research has clearly shown that the number of cases is much higher because there are families with more than one girl or girl mothers with more than one child. Bweyeye has more than 600 girl mothers between the ages of 16 and 25; a serious problem for a rural area! The situation is painful and difficult. The "cut and sew" project woke us up.

Progress since last status report:

Currently 40 girls are selected: 30 for cutting and sewing and 10 for knitting. We have 20 regular sewing machines, 3 knitting machines and modern, high-capacity machines for embroidery, buttonholes, ...
To better organize themselves, the girls chose their representatives:
the oldest: DUSABIMANA Berthe, was pregnant in the 5th year of secondary education, she was able to complete her studies in mathematics and computer science at the age of 24,
discipline: UWAMAHORO Vestine (21 years old), was pregnant in the second year of secondary education, she did not have the chance to continue her studies.

Together with the representatives, the girls determined the teaching hours as follows:

* On Friday the lessons finish at 1 pm for the girls who have up to 4 hours to go home

Financial status:

8082 €

Problems/concerns:

- Young mothers who have children under 2 years old;
- Young mothers from Murwa and Rasano who travel between 3 to 4 hours to the center;
- Illiterate young mother girls;
- The lack of meals in the afternoon (young people from Murwa and Rasano)
- As well as the evening meal: during the day the girls follow the lessons while they actually have
to look for food for the evening.

Visit of the board Vleugels van Hoop november 2019

Date:                     November 6th 2019

Name project:         Bweyeye - surrounding mothers in cutting and sewing practice

N° project:            98

General status:

During our visit to the project on November 6th, the board of Vleugels van Hoop was warm welcomed in the sewing workshop.
The machines are functional and are placed very close to each other. The knitting machines are positioned in a small, dark room.

Problems/concerns:

As some students need to walk more than 4 hours per day to come to the workshop they step out. Therefore one would like to start on a 2nd location

Follow-up december 2019

Date:                     December 19th 2019

General status:

The project is operational for 3 months and supports 32 child-mothers (25 in cut & seam and 6 in knitting). However, there is a lack of money for coaching and material. On December 11 there was a meeting with all those responsible. To succeed, we will increase the apprenticeship to 6 months and each student must collect 10,000 FRW to help fund material.

Progress since last status report:

The project gives hope for a better future. The current result is irreversible and shows success; Vleugels van Hoop realized a miracle here. The students are able to take measurements, sew and knit. In addition, there is citizenship education (traditional dance) and hygiene education. The products (knitwear, skirts, shirts, ...) will be sold in January '20 to contribute to the development of the school.

Financial status:

Financing: € 8,082
funds from: Vleugels van Hoop vzw

Problems/concerns:

- Lack of resources for coaching
- Lack of material
- The girls from Murwa and Rasano have dropped out because of the enormous
distance they have to travel to the school
- Various unforeseen events in the development of the project
- The degree of illiteracy

Follow-up june 2020

Date:                    June 4th 2019

Name project:       Bweyeye - Surrounding mothers in cutting and sewing practice.

General status:

- We managed to sew 1050 masks, assuming that according to the preventative measures for covid19, we would find customers. So far, we anticipate a loss of approximately 400,000 FrRw.
- In accordance with government measures and rules regarding the pandemic, we suspended the training of the young mothers until all schools reopen in September.
- Half of the students, with a score of more than 70%, continue to attend the workshop. In this way they can continue to work at the required safety distance.

Problems/concerns:

- Bweyeye is completely isolated from the outside world because there is no means of transport because of the inclusion of the Rusizi district.
- RRA (The Rwandan Office of Revenue and Taxes), asks us to apply for a trade register.
- The costs of the teachers for a period of three months.
- Handing over certificates for the 1st promotion (please suggest).
- The 2nd promotion will start in September (to be discussed), but the district is asking
us to continue to support these child mothers. The question is whether we can pay the teachers.
