Construction of a centre for disabled children - phase 1

Location: Nyacyonga, district Gasabo

Project leadtime: 1 year

Requestor: Didier SEMANYENZI on behalf of Jya Mu Bandi Mwana

Description of the project:

The current centre for disabled children Karuruma is situated in a (rental) house. This is a temporary solution, as the type of rooms is not in line with the norms. Earlier the building was adapted where needed, with the help of Vleugels van Hoop vzw. On the other hand there is a huge lack of space and the targeted needs are not covered.

Today they have to leave... they are pushed on the street!

There is 1 sparkle of hope though!
An international organisation donated a piece of land to Jya Mu Bandi Mwana.
The construction plans are ready though the needed funds are not available.

The overall construction project will be spread over 3 years. Seen the needed funds the project will be split in 3 phases.

Objectives:

The objectives of the 1st phase are:

  • Preparation of the site
  • Construction of 3 classrooms
  • Construction of toilets next to the classes
  • Construction of the refectory and kitchen
  • Construction of the office and a room for physical therapy
  • Construction of 2 dormitories (girls and boys)
  • Construction of a sanitary block with toilets and showers

Budget:

The budget for phase 1is 27.778.500 RwFr, which is about € 29.850 (exchange rate May 15th 2014)

Follow-up of the project

Date: August 8th 2014

General status:

Since the beginning of juni 2014, Jya Mu Bandi Mwana is doing, with the financial support of Vleugels van Hoop, the construction works for the centre for disabled children. These works have started with the installation of the yard and listing all needed materials. At the moment (beginning of Aug.’14) the preparational activities are finalised, water and electricity are under construction, the preparation of the site is done so now the real construction activities can start, i.e. foundations, build up and place the roof construction.

Progress since last status report:

The executed preparational activities executed during the past 2 months are:
- signing the agreement for installation of water and electricity by the competent suppliers
- purchase of materials like mattocks, heels,…
- preparation of the site is almost completed
- a storage space was build and a toilet is foreseen
The site work are evolving well and will be completed by mid of August.

Financial status:

Financing & realised expenditures during Phase 1  (beginning Aug. 2014)
Own contribution of the association (include. purchase of site) 21.300.000 Purchase site 20.000.000
Support from
Vleugels Van Hoop
27.778.500 Expenditures till August 1st 2014 3.885.000
Total 49.101.500   23.885.000
    Balance 25.216.500

Problems/concerns:

Delays water company:
Water is crucial, a basic need for construction works. We had to wait for the signing of the agreement to foresee the supply to the site. A yard tank was installed to not hinder the works in the future.

Long period of preparing the site:
Removal of roots and rocks took longer than planned for. Indeed, part of the site was bush in the past (long, deep roots).

Review of the work plan in line with the remarks of the urban authority of the city Kigali:
On Juli 25th 2014, the site was visited by relevant authorities. When showing the work plans the advice was given to foresee the foundations fully, to later on construct the buildings module by module.
