Mater Salvatoris Kapellen

A normal schoolday at the Mater Salvatoris-institute in Kapellen? Or not? On February 7th we got a presentation about the projects of ‘Vleugels van Hoop’. Part of our students decided on a voluntary base to collect money for this organisation.

Those who had there, before February 7th, their doubts whether ‘Vleugels van Hoop’ was an interesting project to commit to, was clearly convinced after the presentation of Hilde and Bernadette. Both ladies flawless succeeded in getting a group of 69 students fully silent. The beautiful presentation showed a versatile image of Central Africa: the beautiful green hills, the warm always smiling population, their optimism and inventiveness despite the lack of infrastructure, education, health care,… Lots of examples where taken from real life and left a deep impression. Students domestic economics learn how to rinse glasses as they never saw a glass before?....for youngsters living anno 2017 an example that appeals their imagination.

Our students were especially charmed by the way the projects are set up: the local population gets tools provided (e.g. a few piglets which they learn to take care for and which they are the start of a breeding program) to fulfil their own needs on a short time frame. The focus lays on self-reliance, not on dependence. On top of this we also got a clear picture about what was realized with the sponsoring we gathered 2 years ago: a centre for disabled children was completely equipped according to the needs of the residents. The contrast between ‘before’ and ‘after’ could not be bigger. And for sure this works motivating !

After the question round lots of the students had a look on the small exposition of manufactured objects and … then the talking started…. Based on the questions it was clear that everybody was inspired to collect sponsor money for the running race on April 26th.

Follow-up of the project

This morning we were warm welcomed in the Mater Salvatoris Instituut in Kapellen on the occasion of the handover of the donation in the frame of their action Good Causes.

Before the start of the "Race of the Golden Roepie" , their yearly sponsored running competition, Sonny received the cheque of 692€.
This was the result of the effort of the students of the 5th and 6th year.
After the handover the sporting event started in full extent.

Luckily the weather gods were in a good mood.
It was heart-warming to see how the students exposed their creativity.  They clearly showed tireless work, not only in raising funds, but also in sporting efforts.
