Solar lanterns

Location:                        Mutimbuzi, Burundi

Project leadtime:            6 months

Requestor:                     NDAYISHIMIYE Liliane, Coordinator (Association Mères des Enfants Handicapés au Burundi – AMEHBU)

Description of the project:

During the day, the child does not have the necessary time to study at home, due to busy family responsibilities, heat, distractions and noise that prevent him from concentrating. However, home study in the morning or evening is difficult due to the lack of safe and permanent lighting, as the single kerosene lamp or candle used by the family cannot provide the desired and safe lighting; on the contrary, oil lamps are harmful to health and lead to all kinds of accidents at home or in the neighborhood. The rechargeable solar lamp offers more facilities and benefits, without significant costs and charging is simple and practical.

Objectives:

This project aims to contribute to improving school results by offering rechargeable solar lamps, which are also better for health and the environment.

Beneficiaries:

100 vulnerable students from Maramvya primary school

Budget:

4000 €

Risks:

None

Follow-up of the project

Date:                     March 2nd 2024

General status:

A visit to the school was made in December to make the list of eligible children, followed by two visits to their households.
At a meeting with the schoolboard, parents and AMEHBU, it was decided to provide 121 children with a lamp, given the vulnerable situation of their families.
After charging in the sun, the lamp is used for 3-5 days and the lifespan is almost 2-3 years.
96% of the beneficiary children passed the second trimester exams.
The parents of the finalists and their children expressed their big gratitude to AMEHBU and Vleugels van Hoop for this very important help.

Progress since last status report:

The project will deliver tangible results, including:
• 121 beneficiary students do their homework in the evening in good conditions
• Greater chance of success for finalists in final exams thanks to academic support classes in the evenings
• Reduction of greenhouse gases thanks to the use of solar lamps
• Reduction of harmful effects on the child's health and of all kinds of accidents at home or in the neighborhood.

Financial status:

The amount received was used to purchase 121 solar lamps.
The transport and communication costs were paid by the association.

Problems/concerns:

• Ask for extra lamps for more children.
• Demand for lamps at other schools
• We were unable to distribute the lamps in December because the children were busy preparing for exams and because of the holidays
• The increase in the price of lamps on the market
• Difficulties for transport in the intervention zone due to fuel shortages
