Dormitory beds and education material
Location: Okweta, Uganda
Project leadtime: 12 months
Requestor: James Alemu on behalf of Hands for Children
Description of the project:
The project aims at providing beds and needed education essential items to the children of the vulnerable communities in Okweta. The beds and the education essential items will be durable for over 5- to 10 years and serve different sets of students’ overtime. This project will at the end, improve students’ performance and reduce the out-of-school ratio in the community.
With more beds (including mattresses, mosquito nets) and educational supplies, more children are admitted. Without essentials objects such as desks children quickly experience great discomfort in classrooms. Aside from physical stress and discomfort, the children are easily distracted and their attention is lost.
Larger sauce pans should be provided to cook food for a larger number of students. Sewing machines are needed to repair their torn clothes.

- To increase the achievement level of the pupils.
Beneficiaries:
317 children, age 10 – 13 years

General status:
The project is completed and the items listed on the budget are in use.
This project is providing beds, mattresses, mosquito nets, sports uniforms and needed items to children living in poverty. The project meets an immediate basic human need. Having a bed, mattress and mosquito net to sleep on to keep warm at night helps ensure that children are well-rested, healthier, and do better in school. Also, providing beds allows guardians and parents to focus on immediate concerns such as health care and education.
This project fills the critical need of providing children of vulnerable communities with basic items to have a functional living space, create stability in their lives, and establish self-reliance.
Progress since last status report: Equipping the new boy’s dormitory with 50 beds makes 50 boys have a safe and comfortable place to sleep and study.
New beds are provided for boarding students who would not be able to attend school if they did not live on the site (those that have a long commute to school).
This project provides children from the community with a quality living environment that will allow them to receive the love, care and education that they need to build a brighter future for themselves.
Financial status:
All funds were spend.
Problems/concerns:
There are more applications of boys who need to get a bed. Because of rising poverty most parents are unable to educate their children.
