Children Centre project – Hands4children

Description of the project:

Their Mission is to empower vulnerable children and young people with skills, knowledge and the right attitude through training, psychosocial support and advocacy on child rights for sustainable development.

Hands for children works to see children live peacefully and benefit from quality education and skills training, enjoy gender violence-free generation, economic security, avoid child marriages and teenage pregnancies and prosper with access to clean water, good health care and nutrition.

The purpose is to set up a children centre with a playground, vocational skills training rooms (e.g. tailoring, carpentry, ICT, construction), a rooms for first aid and a dormitory for girls.
The centre will be called ‘Joy children centre’.

Objectives:

• To facilitate the development of children/ youth through training in relevant skills and education.
• To advocate and promote the rights of this targetgroup
• To work with other partners in child welfare activities in a bid to protect child rights.
• To minimise HIV and AIDS among both the in and out of schoolchildren and adolescents.
• To improve livelihoods among poor, vulnerable and disadvantaged children.
• To improve access to health and education among children.

Beneficiaries:

The direct beneficiaries are 450 deprived children. A vulnerable group of especially orphans, street children, working children, children of families ‘at risk’ (like HIV/AIDS affected, children of single parents and girls).

Budget:

17.525 €

Risks:

• Overcrowded play areas
• Inadequate control : we shall ensure that we have volunteer staff to supervise all activities or during the time of play
• Lack of maintenance, broken or faulty equipment. We shall ensure that everything will be repaired, maintained and checked before it is used or played with.

Follow-up of the project

Name project: Project 96 - Children Centre project – Hands4children

General status:

The construction of the children center was going smooth and is finalized by now.

Progress since last status report:

All doors, windows and floors have been completed and the roof is ready. Remains removing the litter from the site so the centre is ready for usage. 
As we ran out of construction budget the painting and installation of the solar panels could not be finalised. Also a lightning arrester should be foreseen.
The construction of the sanitary block (project extension) will be finalized in the course of June.

Financial status:

The full amount of the first funds transferred have been used.

Problems/concerns:

On advice of an engineer, the walls have been build thicker than foreseen and a more solid way of construction of the roof has been done.
Because of the small lack of funds (bad exchange rate) and the additional construction costs, we do not have funds anymore for completing the painting and the solar electricity.

Extention project 2019

Name project:    Project 96: Extension – Sanitary block girls – Hands4children

Description of the project:

After the construction of the building for the girls, there is a need for a sanitary block.

Objectives:

Provide sanitary space (toilets, washing room) for the girls

Beneficiaries:

The direct beneficiaries are the girls who will stay in the centre. A vulnerable group of mainly orphans, street children, working children and children from families at risk.

Budget:

4.208 €
